What is uveitis?

Uveitis is a condition characterized by uvea (the middle layer of your eye) inflammation. It can become painful and alter the eyesight in one or both of your eyes, leading to blindness in some cases. Fortunately, uveitis is treatable.

What are the symptoms of uveitis?

• Red eyes
• Eye irritation
• Eye pain
• Blurred vision
• Swelling
• Light sensitivity
• Pupil shape changes 
• White liquid accumulation in your eye

What are the risk factors for uveitis?

Uveitis risk factors may include:

• Genetics
• Eye injuries
• Infections
• Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions

• Bacteria

However, up to 70% of cases of uveitis have unknown causes. Fortunately, uveitis isn’t contagious (does not spread from person to person).

Left untreated, uveitis may increase your risk of permanent vision loss, cataracts, glaucoma, macular edema, and similar complications. 

How is uveitis diagnosed?

You may complete vision testing, an eye pressure evaluation, blood tests, and eye imaging procedures to look for changes in the structure of your eyes. Your eye doctor determines whether you have uveitis and how best to treat your condition.

How is uveitis treated?

Your individualized uveitis treatment plan may consist of medications and/or surgery. Treatments focus on preserving vision, reducing pain and inflammation, and optimizing overall eye health to avoid further concerns.
